QAl Stewart The Sage Gateshead May 18th 2009
I’m not sure if I have ever seen Al Stewart in concert before. I think I may have seen him in the early 70s in his folk days before Year of the Cat; but can’t swear to it. So I figured it was time to put that right and went to the Sage last Monday. The downstairs hall was 3/4 full; while upstairs was almost empty; I understand on previous visits it has been better attended.
Al’s show was OK. He had a pretty good guitarist with him and the songs were pleasant enough. The only ones I knew were Year of the Cat and on the Border. As an eveing out it was quite enjoyable, but nothing particularly memorable.

Al Stewart is a greatly under-estimated singer-songwriter and personal favourite. I first saw him in 1988 at Newcastle’s Playhouse Theatre with Ian Matthews, of Matthews Southern Comfort, as support. Stewart is a very talented guitarist and brought on another ace player, the late Isaac Guillory, as guitar support during part of his one-man show. Subsequently I saw him on a very snowy night at Newcastle’s Tyne Theatre, again at The South Shields Cellar Club, at South Shields Customs House, and most recently The Sage, Gateshead, although not on the night you refer to with ex-Wings guitarist Laurence Juber. When I saw him at The Sage guitar support came from his usual sidesman Dave Nachmanoff. That night he also featured a bass player and a saxophonist for ‘Year of the Cat’.

Hi Yes I agree Al Stewart is pretty good, I have only seen him a couple of times, but really enjoyed it, particularly the Year of the Cat period material Cheers Peter
