Muse Wembley Stadium Saturday 16th June 2007
This was the first time we saw Muse and the first rock concert at the new Wembley Stadium. Up until this point Muse were pretty unfamiliar to me, but friends had told me how good they were in concert, so I bought tickets as soon as they went on sale, which was the previous December. The concert sold out on the first day and a second show was added. Marie, David and Laura all came to the gig. Support came from The Streets, Dirty Pretty Things, and Rodrigo y Gabriela.
We travelled to London by train and stayed in a Hotel in Wembley, walking distance from the stadium. The support bands were OK, although they suffered from poor sound, as is often the case at large open air gigs. Rodrigo y Gabriela were very different to anything I was expecting, full of acoustic latin rhythms, and The Streets got the crowd going and in the mood for the main act. Nothing could have prepared us for just how amazing Muse were that day. It was one of those gigs where everything just came right. The sound was excellent, the band played a first class set, the stage set was incredible and the crowd were with Muse as soon from the moment that they walked on to the stage.
The band appeared up high, on a large rising platform, accompanied by smoke and confetti. They then walked through the centre of the crowd on a raised walkway, surrounded by men in yellow radio-active suits and hazard masks. They started with Knights of Cydonia, and the whole place erupted; 100,000 people jumping up and down and singing along as one. And the atmosphere stayed like that for the next two hours. Laura still says it is the best big show she has experienced. We have seen Muse twice more since then, once at Glastonbury and once in Manchester, which I have already blogged on.

We were all so impressed with Muse that we fancied going to see them again so Marie suggested that we get tickets for this. The gig had been sold out for months and I started to check Seetickets every day to see if any tickets came up. They didn’t; but we managed to score four tickets on ebay at slightly less than face value. The tickets arrived on Wednesday just a few days before the show. We left at around 4pm and had an uneventful drive across to Manchester, arriving just as support Band of Skulls were finishing. We found some seats towards the side of the side of the stadium with a good view of the stage. Editors were next up and seemed pretty good, although the sound was not great from where we were sitting.
At around 8.15pm Muse took to the stage, starting with Uprising. They were accompanied by a crowd waving flags and banners carrying the key slogans from the song (“they will not control us”; “we will be victorious”). The stage is like nothing you have ever seen before. It must be the most impressive set up out on the road today. It resembles something like a giant building with the band in the centre of it, surrounded by loads of screens with the images flashing between artwork that mirrors the song lyrics and shots from the band on stage. Difficult to describe, it has to be seen to be believed and must have taken days to setup and cost a fortune.
Muse were as awesome as ever. The sound was spot on, the crowd loved them a great atmosphere. At one point they all grouped on a small stage which went out into and above the crowd. From where we were sitting it looked like they were in flying above the crowd. They have to be the best contemporary band out there at the moment; this show takes some beating. Favourites for me were Feeling Good and the closer: Knights of Cydonia. They finished about 10.30. Got out the car park around 11.15 and then got stuck in a diversion off the M62 which delayed us quite a bit. Home at 2.30am.
Laura and I are going to see the New York Dolls tonight at the Cluny Newcastle. Then time for a rest.

So we (me, Marie, Laura, David) decided to sample the delights of a modern festival. It’s 30 years since I last when to 3 day festival and stayed for all 3 days (Reading 1980), so I was quite excited about this. We travelled down on Wed and arrived Wed night. Thursday was spent exploring the massive site and on the evening we sampled Nik Turner’s Space Ritual and Curved Air (who we hardly saw as the tent in which they were playing was completely packed). Highlights were singing along to Rolf Harris who opened the Pyramid stage on Friday, Gorillaz, Muse who were just awesome on Saturday, and Ray Davies and Stevie Wonder on Sunday who turned out all the hits for us. We all had a great weekend; the festival is so big we gave up on the idea of trying to see all of the bands that we had planned and just enjoyed the event; which was great.
