Shift-Static The Telegraph Newcastle 16 Oct 2010

Shift-Static The Telegraph Newcastle 16 Oct 2010
This was the first Shift-Static gig that Marie and I had seen for some time. They were playing upstairs in the Telegraph to a home crowd, sandwiched between a few other local music combos. They had played a gig at the Head of Steam and a sold out show at the Cumberland Arms during Freshers week, but we hadn’t made it along to those shows. The band have been using the gap over the Summer to craft some new tunes for us, and had also bought some new sparkly hardware gismos which were on display (and in use!) and which produced some wonderful new sounds for us. The set was short as time was limited; the new songs such as “Get the Echo” blended well with older favourites such as “Haystacks” and the crowd showed their appreciation by giving them a great reception. Next gig up is on the 16 November.

New York Dolls The Cluny Newcastle 5 Sep 2010

New York Dolls The Cluny Newcastle 5 Sep 2010
The New York Dolls played three intimate (for them) shows at the Cluny in Newcastle. The first night was last night (Saturday). Laura and I are went along on the Sunday. We were still recovering from Muse in Manchester the night before, but also couldn’t wait for this.
Just got back. We were right down the front next to the stage. Deafening. Got Sylvain’s plectrum for Laura and she played his guitar! These guys really rock and Sylvain is a real character. It was almost like being at one of the rehearsals with the band trying a few new songs out, before they commit them to CD. In one case they played one of the new songs twice to be sure they were getting it right.
Setlist included (along with some brand new songs):
Looking for a Kiss
Cause I Sez So
We’re All in Love
Private World
Nobody Got No Bizness
Better Than You
Who Are the Mystery Girls?
Dance Like a Monkey
You Cant Put Your Arms Around A Memory
Pills
Bo Diddley
Trash
Jet Boy

Malcolm McLaren The Baltic Newcastle 13 November 2009

Malcolm McLaren The Baltic Newcastle 13 November 2009
I was seeped in rock music throughout the early days of punk, and caught all of the major punk gigs in the North East: The Pistols, The Clash, the Damned, the Jam, Vibrators, 999, Siouxsie, Ramones, Television, Iggy, Buzzcocks, and too many others to mention. So when I saw that Malcolm McLaren was coming to the Baltic Art gallery to present his new film and talk about his work I couldn’t resist getting tickets to go along and hear what he had to say. I was hoping for some insights into those great days which are fasting becoming fading memories. So Laura, David and I went to this event last Friday to hear what Malcolm had to say.
The evening had been sold out for some time and was held in the exhibition space in the Baltic, which holds around 300 people (I would guess). The main part of the evening was the first showing of Malcolm’s new film: Paris. Paris is in 21 sections; each section is a collage of old French commercials overlaid with McLaren speaking, singing and other music. After the film Malcolm was interviewed and then he took questions from the audience.
I usually enjoy most things that I go to and always look for the positives in a performance; and almost always find some. On Friday I am afraid I didn’t really see anything positive. The film seemed to go on forever and I’m afraid I either didn’t get it at all; or it really isn’t very good at all. Similarly, I didn’t enjoy the discussions with Malcolm, which focussed on his contributions to art over the years. I had been hoping for more insights into his role in the Sex Pistols and the emergence of Punk. Still it was interesting to see him, but not an experience I would wish to repeat.

Buzzcocks Newcastle 18 Jan 2009

The Buzzcocks Newcastle Academy 18 Jan 2009

Laura and I decided to go along and see the Buzzcocks at the Academy last Sunday. I hadn’t seen them since their heyday in the late 70s; Laura had heard a few of their well-known songs on the radio and on punk compilations. The gig promised to be good; on this tour the Buzzcocks are playing their first two albums in their entirety alongside all their hits.

The Academy was pretty full downstairs; the balcony was not open for this gig. The crowd were quite mixed, a lot of them were old punks who were sporting Stiff Little Fingers, Damned and Exploited t-shirts. The support act was the Lurkers; another old name from the 70s. We arrived just as the Lurkers took the stage; they were pretty Ok actually; Laura recognised a couple of the songs, and I recalled seeing them in the late 70s in Sunderland at Finos (or was it Lees Club in those days?).

The Buzzcocks came on to a great roar from the crowd and launch straight Fast Cars the first track on their first album. What follows is a set of classic punk pop songs. I’d forgotten just how good they were. Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle still look and sound great and the crowd are well into it right from the start. All the favourites are played : I don’t mind; Ever fallen in love, Promises, What do I get and some I’d forgotten: Fiction Romance, Nostalgia.

Laura counted 23 songs in 2 hours. Great. It doesn’t come much better than this, and gets us both in the mood for the Magazine reunion show, which we will be seeing at the London Forum in a few weeks time.
