Guns N Roses Gateshead Stadium 1992

Guns N Roses Gateshead Stadium 1992
Seeing Guns N Roses last week has made me cast my mind back to the first and only other time I saw them. This was when they were at the height of their success, on the Use Your Illusion tour. The tour called at Gateshead Stadium in 1992, with support from Soundgarden and Faith No More. This was of course the original classic line up including Axl Rose on lead vocals, Slash on lead guitar, and Duff McKagan on bass. I went along to the gig with Ashleigh and her friend, who were raving about the band at the time. It was a good gig, although to be honest I don’t remember being as impressed by them as I was last week (is that heresy?). The Guns N Roses history site notes of the gig: “25,000 people see GN’R at the Gateshead International Stadium in Newcastle (!), England. Duff had a verbal altercation with one fan. After Axl’s words of warning – “I wouldn’t mess with him, he’s not had a drink in two weeks!” – the fan piped down. After the show the band fly back to London to continue their stay at the exclusive Conrad Hotel, where fellow guests included Prince and INXS.” Setlist: It’s So Easy; Mr. Brownstone; Live and Let Die; Bad Obsession; Attitude; My Michelle; Double Talkin’ Jive; Civil War; Patience; Welcome to the Jungle; You Could Be Mine; November Rain; Speak Softly Love; Sweet Child O’ Mine; Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door; Don’t Cry; Paradise City

Just came across this blog while checking the date for this gig, good site.

This was my very first gig that started me on a trek of seeing every band a could manage. 20 years ago this month, it started here.

The ‘verbal altercation’ was because the moron in the crowd had thrown a pint at Duff – not great when you’re using an electric guitar. We were behind it and saw it happen. Awesome gig. Was most impressed by FNM. Soundgarden were good too – real shame about the news of Chris Cornell’s detah today.

was at this one, they’d lost the plot a little by this time, thought they’d become big n bloated, never the same after Steve Adler and izzy left, stopped being a rock n roll band and became the Axl rose psycho drama. 1st time I saw them was at the monsters of rock at donington 1988 which despite the awful tragedy with the two fans dying, which we in the crowd obviously didn’t know at the time, is maybe the best single gig I’ve ever seen, helloween g’n’r megadeth Dave lee Roth kiss iron maiden, unbelievable bill, was 18 and as I say, probably the best day of live music ever, and guns n roses were second on the bill but by the time the day came around they were huge and could’ve headlined, mad.

It was an amazing day fuelled by scrumpy and, ahem, other intoxicants lol! Dave lee Roth was pure showmanship and had Steve vai on guitar, kiss were make up less but still great, maiden were at their live peak, but guns n roses probably stole the show, though tinged with tragedy due to the two lads who lost their lives during the slam dancing, awful, only found out through the music press later, this is obviously way before smart phones and social media. Still one of my top 5 gig regrets is missing them at the city hall in 87, oh for a time machine
